I totally agree about how the African American community are not sharing the knowledge of league. The Elderly people that lived through that time period.. tries to cover up the not so good history of that time period.. I feel they have put blinders on to mask the pain and suffering they went through. So, they forgot about the good times and all the history behide it.

Labon,

I look forward to reading your blog. I'm glad you changed your mind and decided to go with baseball.

The link I promised I would send you (although you probably already have it) is:

http://www.nlbm.com/

Also, the speakers at the Oral History Association who spoke about the Negro Leagues and oral history were:

Pellom McDaniels III, Emory University

Raymond Doswell, Kansas State University and Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

Cari D. Barragree, Kansas State University

Perhaps googling them might turn up something.

See you in class. Good Luck!

Dear Labon,

Knowing that your blog covers Negro League baseball, wanted you to be aware that Hall-of-Famer Monte Irvin will be honored on Friday, September 15 by the Newark Bears baseball team, culminating two days of events and celebrations that recognize Newark, NJ's rich baseball history.

As you probably know, the Newark Eagles played in the Negro National League from 1936 to 1948. The team featured future Hall-of-Famers Larry Doby (the first black player in the American League), Ray Dandridge, Leon Day, Monte Irvin, Biz Mackey, and Willie Wells, as well as other stars such as Don Newcombe. The Eagles shared Ruppert Stadium with the minor-league Newark Bears.

Also, the team was owned by Effa Manley was the first female owner and operator of a professional team.

Today, the Newark Bears Atlantic League franchise carries on the City's baseball heritage, and a Ring of Honor to be unveiled on Friday will serve as a permanent reminder of past Eagles and Bears stars.

Anyone who lives in the Newark-area is encouraged to attend the Bears game. Gates will open at 6 p.m. at Riverfront Stadium for the final regular season home game for the Newark Bears. At 6:30 p.m., the former Eagles will be honored by Newark Mayor Cory Booker and DiVincenzo. The game will follow at 7:05 p.m.

The Star-Ledger article linked here has more details. Please e-mail with any questions.
